Chopin Festival (Valldemossa) 1 – 29 August.

Pilgrimage Palma to Lluc – 1st August. Overnight walk from Palma to Lluc

Copa del Rey (The King’s Cup) 30 July – 8 August. Now in its 23rd year, this international yacht race is widely followed not only because of its patronage by the Royal Spanish Family, but also because of the many other celebrities that are attracted such to this wonderful race, such as actor Antonio Banderas.

Lady of the Angels Festival – 2nd August. A re-creation of Moors Versus Christians Battle, which is a great excuse for a day of festivities in Pollensa.

Summer Serenades- 3 – 21st August. Classical music concerts in Palma’s famous Bellver Castle.

Count of Barcelona Trophy – 17 – 23rd August. Classic yacht race and exhibition.

The Montuiri Festival – 23-24th August. “Els Cossiers” is the oldest record dances of Mallorca celebrating a classic story of good triumphing over evil. This features a key figure of “The Lady” who directs the dance and the “Devil” (better know here as the “Dimoni”).

Fiesta de la Vendimia (Grape Harvest) – end September. Binissalem hosts one of the main fiesta for the harvest on the island. Street parties, tastings and general merriment.

COMING UP…

36th International Chess Olympiad – 14th – 31st October, 2004.

A total of 140 participating male and 100 female teams are expected to participate in this event being hosted by the region of Calvia in south west Mallorca where approximately 1700 people will be accommodated throughout the event. Apart from the main Chess Olympiad, five separate tournaments will also be held during the two weeks with prize money of up to 6,000 euros for first place.

International Mallorca Marathon, October 24th, 2004

This year, for the first time, Palma will host the International Mallorca Marathon, over 42,195 kilometres. Approximately 5000 to 8000 international athletes professional and non professional, from all over Europe, are expected to participate in this marathon. The circuit will start from the outskirts of Palma down to the sea, along the Paseo Maritimo and around the city’s historic old town. Approximately 20,000 spectators are expected to attend this event, which is sponsored by the world’s largest tour operator, Tui. Further information and inscriptions: www.tui-marathon.com
