MALLORCA TOURIST BOARD LAUNCHES CENTENARY
New logo launched for centenary year
Mallorca, one of the Brit’s best loved overseas destinations, launches this week its preliminary programme of activities and new logo for its Centenary Year in 2005 making it one of the the oldest tourist boards in Europe.
However, for the British market, the island became famous in the 1960’s when the “package holiday” was created. Thereafter followed a period of dramatic growth on Mallorca with, on one occasion 10 hotels opening in one day. Mallorca has become a reference model for tourism in the industry and is often studied by emerging tourism destinations.
By 1962 one million passengers movements were recorded at the airport. Today, that figure reaches approximately 9 million passengers annually and the new International Palma Airport now handles (in summer) an average of 500-800 flights daily from all over Europe. Furthermore, on certain days in the summer, Palma Airport will record more aircraft movements than London’s Heathrow Airport.
The Mallorcan Tourist Boad remains a private, independent entity. When it was founded in 1905 its’ objective was to create awareness of Mallorca as a destination and to study and implement how to promote the island to potential visitors. Throughout the years its role has changed but it remains committed to constantly improving the tourism product and functions as a forum where tourism professionals debate important issues, policies, and decide on the future tourism strategy.
