Palma de Mallorca, 13th Jul 04
FOUR NEW QUALITY HOTELS OPEN IN SOLLER
The trend to restore beautiful old buildings and fincas as hotels continues on Mallorca so that visitors can experience a different holiday on the island, which still remains the favourite overseas holiday destination for the British.
This trend is happening all over the island. However, this month we focus on the area of the Soller Valley on the north eastern coast of the Sierra Traumuntana Mountain range, famous for its antique train, which operates daily between the town and Palma, and its antique tram which takes visitors to and from Soller town to The Port.
All of the following hotels are open all year round and are owned and family run. The onus is very much on service and to deliver a unique experience to their guests so they keep on coming back.
Gran Hotel Soller Restaurant & Spa – this five star hotel officially opens this month on the site of an existing hotel, which had been closed for many years and has now been restored to its former splendour. It is located in the heart of Soller town next to its bustling square and market.
The hotel features 38 rooms and suites. A luxury health spa with indoor heated swimming pool, sauna, Jacuzzi, Turkish bath, massage and full treatment centre, gymnasium, and hairdressers. A spectacular roof-top swimming pool bar and snack area with panoramic views across the town and mountains. Other features include a bar, library and outside dining area.
The hotel’s designers feature local stone wherever appropriate, and have made great efforts to design stylish conference & meeting facilities for up to 80 people. These rooms are fully equipped with all the latest audio visual technology.
Soller born Chef Xisco Martorell, has worked in some of the island’s top hotels including La Residencia and the Gran Hotel Son Net. He heads up the hotel’s “Can Blau” a la carte restaurant. Xisco has produced a menu focusing on Mediterranean cuisine using as much local Soller produce as possible. Guests are encouraged to choose their wines from the restaurant’s walk-in wine cellar.
The hotel’s spa, treatment rooms, hairdressers and the Can Blau restaurant are also open to the public year round. Prices from 200 euros per room per night. Further information: www.granhotelsoller.com. Tel: + 34 971 63 86 86.
Hotel Salvia – this beautifully restored town house, located close to the square in Soller, features 6 rooms all individually decorated with splendid views of the surrounding mountains. The hotel has combined the traditional old style with all the comforts of modern living and features a bar, outside and inside dining area, large swimming pool, gardens and terrace. Prices start from 225 euros per room per night to include breakfast. For more information: www.hotelsalvia.com Tel: + 34 971 634 936.
Hotel-Apartment Sa Tanqueta – 14 individual apartments (of differing sizes) in the heart of the mountains, orange and lemon groves, on the outskirts of the village of Fornalutx. The building has been tastefully finished in traditional Mallorcan style, and all the apartments are fully equipped with A/C and heating, television, kitchenette etc...
A large outdoor swimming pool overlooking the mountains is available for all guests.
The Marroig Family want their guests to get the most out of the area and therefore organise walks each day into the surrounding countryside. In addition, they often organise for interested guests to see their local finca (family farm estate) where they can join in and pick oranges (reputed to be the best on the island). Horse riding can also be arranged. Prices start from 120 euros per day for a two bedroom apartment to include breakfast. Further information: www.sa-tanqueta.com. Tel: + 34 971 638 520.
Hotel Aimia, Port de Soller - also opens this month and has been owned by the local Alcover family for many years. Recently they took a decision to completely revamp the look and the whole concept to deliver a stylish modern hotel with a clean contemporary design making the best of the hotel’s wonderful sea views over The Port. Great care has been taken to incorporate the use of equipment for recycling water and waste, providing solar energy and using energy saving systems throughout the hotel.
The Hotel Aimia features 43 fully equipped rooms, a large outdoor swimming pool, an indoor swimming pool with jacuzzi, sauna, Turkish bath, fitness room, sunbathing terrace, and reading room/library. The a la carte “Airecel” restaurant, café/bar and cocktail bar, are also open to the public as well as hotel guests. Conference facilities include a multi-purpose room for up to 60 people with the latest technology for audio visual equipment, Internet etc…
Prices start from 72 euros per person, per day sharing a double room to include breakfast. Further information: www.aimiahotel.com Tel: + 34 971 631 200.
Says Tomeu Deya, Manager of the Mallorca Tourist Board; “The Hotel Aimia, among others, is an excellent example of how local hoteliers are recognising that their clientele have completely changed in the last 10-15 years, and are responding to a new type of client that wants top quality, personal service, style, up to date technology and all the comforts (and more) that he would experience at home in a relaxed, informal environment”.
Please bear in mind that these examples represent just a few of the lovely hotels available in the area. For a complete, up to date, list please go to the region’s website: www.visitsoller.com.
