TOURING ART & PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITIONS ENCOURAGE VISITORS TO SEE THE ISLAND'S BEAUTY
As part of the celebrations planned for the Mallorca Tourist Board's Centenary, two touring art exhibitions have been organised. On Mallorca, the tourist board has lent its own paintings for a roving exhibition around the island. In the UK, the "Mallorca Enchanted" photographic exhibition will start this month in London.
THE MALLORCA TOURIST BOARD CENTENARY
TRAVELLING ART COLLECTION
In 1905 the Mallorca Tourist Board was founded to become a centre for tourism initiatives, and it was to become the first tourist board in Spain. Its’ objective was not only to promote tourism and attract visitors, but to capture the relatively new experience of travelling.
Art was also considered the medium most suitable to achieve its ambitious plans.
It was also necessary to communicate the beauty of Mallorca with an attractive publicity campaign via travel guides, brochures and posters. This campaign was absolutely right, and the people responsible for it really understood how important the medium of art was to create impact and interest in the type of tourism that they wished to attract. This was winter tourism, which was cultural, selective and communicated a feeling of the island via the artists’ work.
Promotion via art was revitalised in 1976 with the publication of annual calendars which depicted the landscapes and customs of the island painted by local or resident artists. These original paintings belong to the Mallorca Tourist Board and form an integral part of its history.
As part of the Tourist Board’s Centenary celebrations, this travelling exhibition of its works of art has been organised to visit the villages of the island that were captured on canvas by these artists as a tribute to them, who very kindly donated their work to the Tourist Board. In the main the exhibition will be found in the main town hall of each location. For further details: The Mallorca Tourist Board, Tel:(0034) 971 71 53 10 or via email: centenarifoment@bitel.es.

The Instituto Cervantes, in the City of London, is hosting the “Mallorca Enchanted” photographic exhibition throughout the month of March.
