EASY LISTENING ON MALLORCA

A round up of some of the top international musicians performing on the island this summer.

International musicians, including George Benson, will open Mallorca’s second Jazz Voyeur Festival on July 29th at the Casino in Calvia. Last year’s festival was so successful that this year it will run over five months through to November with some concerts in Palma’s Auditorium and Conservatory.

Other groups will include Kool and the Gang (10th September); The George Duke Sextet (22nd October); Michael Bolton (30th October); Bebo Valdes, Rosa Passos and Chano Dominguez (31st October). The Brad Mehldau Trio and The Roy Haynes Quartet will both be performing in November (18th & 19th respectively).

Another established jazz event on the island is the International Jazz Festival Sa Pobla 2005, which has been running for over 10 years and starts on July 28th through to August 31st. This year it will feature The Marcus Miller Band(28th July), Skeeter Brandon and the Prime Rib Blues Band (9th August), Miranda Jazz Sextet (16th August) and the URI Caine Bedrock Band (31st August) Admission is free for all concerts which start at 10.30 pm in Sa Pobla’s main “Plaza”. The Chopin Festival in Valldemossa’s famous Cartuja where Chopin spent a winter in 1838 with his lover George Sand, will run this year from 7th – 28th August and feature international stars including the award winning pianist, Gwyneth Chen. Over on the north of the island, The Pollenca Festival is held in equally impressive surroundings in the Santa Domingo Cloisters in Pollenca Town. The festival this year features a wonderful mix of musical offerings opening with the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra on July 13th and the Brubeck Brothers Quartet on July 16th.
