POLLENSA & PUERTO POLLENSA - STILL FAVOURITE WITH BRITISH VISITORS

The Mallorca Tourist Board revisits some of the latest and oldest hotel accommodation for visitors.

As part of its’ Centenary Celebrations, the Mallorca Tourist Board’s team have been revisiting some of the island’s most popular hot spots to see what brings visitors back year after year.

In the north of the island, the British love affair with Pollensa and its Port still continues today almost 100 years after Pollensa’s first, and indeed Mallorca’s first hotel, was opened on the town square in 1907.

Pollensa Town

Hotel Juma – opened by the family Ochogavia in 1907, this 7 bedroom hotel makes an ideal base to explore the area. Prices start at 108 euros per night for 2 people sharing a double room, including breakfast and local tax.

Last year the Ochogavia family opened a new hotel just around the corner, called L’Hostal, in what was formerly the hostel used by market traders coming to the town’s Sunday market.

L’Hostal – blends cool contemporary design with traditional Mallorquin has 6 rooms and is open all year round. Prices start at 85 euros per night for a double room including breakfast and local tax.

Other small boutique hotels in the town include:

Hotel Desbrull – features 6 rooms with fresh modern design. Prices start from 70 euros per night for a double room to include breakfast (not including local tax). Reservations, Tel: (+34) 971 535055 www.desbrull.com.

Posada de Lluc – has 8 rooms decorated in a traditional Mallorquin style and features an outdoor swimming pool. Prices start from 95 euros for a double room to include breakfast and local tax. Reservations: Tel: 971 535 220 www.posadalluc.com.

Hotel & Spa Son Brull – is Pollensa’s most recent luxury rural hotel opened two years ago. Its sister hotel, the Cala Sant Vicenc is also owned and managed by the Suau family and both hotels are featured by Relais & Chateaux. Located just outside Pollensa town, the Son Brull is located in a former convent. This historic and impressive building dominates the surrounding countryside, and has been completely renovated to maintain traditional Mallorquin features combined with the very latest in contemporary interior design.

The hotel features 23 rooms and suites, a spa using natural products from the island, indoor and outdoor pool, the “365” a la carte restaurant, a snack bar & chill out lounge and conference /meeting facilities.

Puerto Pollensa

Pollentia Club Resort – is located on Pollensa Bay right beside the sea between the Cap de Bou beach and the natural park of La Albufereta. The resort covers a total area of 85.000 m2 with established Mediterranean gardens, ornamental lake, and water features throughout. It has approximately 500 rooms housed in suites in the Pollentia Village (four star) and in apartments in El Pollentia Maris (three star).

The resort has been specifically designed to maintain its environment and has its own water treatment plant which means that all the water used within the resort is generated onsite. Hotel Illa d'Or – this four star hotel is located on the Pine Walk in front of the sea - a short walk from Puerto Pollensa and has recently celebrated its 75th anniversary. As one of the oldest hotels in the Port, it remains family owned and has hosted many famous guests over the years including Agatha Christie, who penned one of her murder mysteries during her stay, actress Jane Seymour and actor, Anthony Quinn. It is a favourite hotel of British guests, who make up the majority of its clientele. Prices start at 93 euros per night in a double room. Birdwatching – this is one of the island’s most famous areas for enthusiasts the L’Albufereta Natural Park is featured by Bird Life International as an area of major importance with many protected species.

Sailing – The Royal Sailing Club of Pollenca is very active and has many British members. Apart from the club’s extensive facilties, each summer various courses are organised for learning how to sail or use a canoe. Mark Manning is in charge of canoeing activities and courses. Pollensa Music Festival – is held in the Cloisters of Santo Domingo in Pollensa Town each year during July and August. www.festivalpollenca.org.

Moors & Christians Festival, August 2nd. This annual fiesta is extremely lively and colourful culmination to the month of celebrations for the town’s patron saint.
