IN SEARCH OF THE ALTERNATIVE MALLORCA
California's Celebrity Retreat "The Ashram" Comes to Mallorca.
Mallorca has always featured a wide range of different holiday experiences. However, the recent announcement that a California-based organisation, The Ashram, is to start its first European retreat in Mallorca may well prove to be the alternative experience to top them all.
The Ashram, which was started in Malibu, California, is based on Hindu philosophy combining spa treatments, yoga and intensive physical activity and is specifically aimed at people who are already in good shape but are attracted to the idea of combining a tough physical regime while in beautiful natural surroundings.
In America, The Ashram has attracted many starry names to its particular method of spiritual and physical cleansing including René Zelwegger, Gwyneth Palthrow, Cindy Crawford and Jane Fonda. Now with The Ashram on their Mediterranean doorstep more British celebrities are expected to become “converts”.
On Mallorca, the organisation is based in a traditional old Mallorquin finca “Can Coll” in the idyllic location of Soller’s mountain range on the south west of the island. Clients can expect to pay in the region of ($3500) £2000 for an intensive week including a daily hike or kayak ride of up to 25 kms on a strictly vegetarian diet with no alcohol or caffeine.

If just the thought of a week at The Ashram is too exhausting there is a gentler option. La Serrania, located just outside Pollensa on the north of the island, is a retreat offering a range of workshops from yoga to Tai Chi, creative writing, painting, Pilates and massage.
Prices vary, for example the yoga retreat starts at approx. £900 euros per person, per week, to include all yoga sessions and meals. Home-grown produce fresh from Pollensa’s local market is featured on the menu as much as possible. Further information and details of forthcoming workshops,

Offering everything from motorbike rides around Sa Calobra to hang gliding, kite surfing or diving in underwater caves. They also feature less active options such as local gastronomy courses, visiting wine producers or indulgent spas and retreats.
Furthermore, if there’s something a visitor wants to try that isn’t already on their activity menu Balearic Discovery will endeavour to find an appropriate supplier. All accommodation featured has been tried and tested, from the traditional, such as a 13th century monastery, to stylish contemporary properties.
