Arabella, Hilton and The Stein Group of hotels continue, among others, to continue to invest on Mallorca.
Mallorca, one of Brit’s best loved overseas destinations has, over the past 15 years, concentrated on offering quality accommodation to its visitors. This year several major developments demonstrate the scale of investment in hotel accommodation on the island. This month, the Castillo Hotel Son Vida will reopen as a “grand luxury” five star hotel after a 12 month refurbishment costing in excess of €27 million euros (approx £18.5 million).
The Castillo Hotel Son Vida, located on the outskirts of Palma with views across the whole of the city and the Bay of Palma, is possibly one of the best known luxury hotels on the island. Originally opened in 1961 it has hosted many famous visitors to the island including Aristotle Onassis, Maria Callas, Princess Grace and Prince Rainier of Monaco.

It is the second hotel the company has opened on the island, the first being The Grand Hotel Son Net located in the mountain village of Puigpunyent.
The hotel is the conversion of an historic country estate and will feature 24 rooms and suites, a gourmet a la carte restaurant, a barbecue restaurant, lobby bar, health, fitness beauty treatment area, interior and exterior swimming pools, conference and meeting facilities. Other facilities include a private limousine service and the use of an 18 hole golf course nearby.

The Hilton Hotel Group has announced that it will open a 5 star luxury hotel in June 2007, which will be its first hotel on the island. The Hilton Sa Torre Hotel is located in the grounds of a finca estate with medieval tower in Lluchmajor dating back to 1369. It is expected to cost approximately €29 million euros (just under £20 million) and will comprise 90 rooms, 15 of which will be suites. The hotel will be operated as a franchise by Gestion T3, a local construction company. It is intended to attract all year round visitors with emphasis on business and conference meetings business outside of the main tourism season.
The Rustic Group, among various hotel projects, has just started work on its new 80 bedroom four star hotel in the centre of Palma. The site, which was originally an old cinema, is directly beside the city’s main train station and is due to be completed by 2007. To date, a name for the hotel has yet to be decided.
The company is working on a new hotel in Palma old town, which is a reconversion of an old building, featuring 30 rooms and 3 suites with bar/restaurant, which is due to open in time for Easter of this year.
Rustic is also refurbishing a small seafront hotel at Ciudad Jardin close to the airport and the fashionable Portixol area. This is due to open in September of this year with 19 rooms, restaurant/bar and terraces.
These new developments on the island bring the total number of four star hotels to over 150, to include the rural hotels on Mallorca, and 24 five star hotels with the Castillo Hotel Son Vida and the Grand Melia Victoria entering the “Grand Luxury” five star plus hotel category.
