MULTI MILLION EURO INVESTMENT IN MALLORCA'S NAUTICAL INDUSTRY PROMOTES ISLAND AS LEADING CENTRE IN MEDITERRANEAN

Major investment in this fast growing industry is now paying off for Mallorca

Mallorca’s local Chamber of Commerce is promoting the island’s nautical industry, which has now converted the island into one of the leading centres in the Mediterranean for small leisure boats and multi million pound superyachts and has created a bustling schedule of regattas and nautical events.

In 2005 an investment approaching 450 million euros was made in Mallorca and the rest of the Balearic Islands in its nautical industry representing a 6.5 % increase over the previous year. Investment continues to pour into this industry representing one of the highest spending in the entire tourism sector.

Mallorca now features 44 marinas and over 14.000 berths backed by a skilled work force to repair and refit boats throughout the year. Alongside the island’s nautical infrastructure, the leisure side of the industry has also grown tremendously and this year Mallorca is set to host a record number of major international regattas and sailing events:

International Sailing Regatas

The XII Breitling Regata, will be hosted in Caliva region’s, Puerto Portals, from 19 – 23 July. This prestigious regatta is part of the international Medcup Circuit, which also includes The King’s Cup (Copa del Rey) taking place in the Bay of Palma from July 29 – 6 August and hosted by the Real Club Nautico in Palma.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of The King’s Cup where participants include the Spanish Royal family, politicians and celebrities from the world of music and showbiz. Participation is also expected from boats practising for next year’s Amercia’s Cup in Valencia.

The Superyacht Cup will celebrate its 10th anniversary on the 11 – 14 October, in Palma. Entry is restricted to 20 boats and for more information: www.thesuperyachtcup.com. Next year the Superyacht Cup will incorporate the New Zealand Millennium Cup next year (16-19 June, 2007) making it an even more spectacular event.

The first three regattas of 2007 are the Princess Sofia Trophy(8-14 April), which is now a well established and respected event in the Spanish sailing calendar. The Hublot Palma Vela (19-23 April) will co incide with The Dragon Gold Cup (9 - 15 April). All these events are taking place at the Real Club Nautico in Palma.
