ROBERT GRAVES MUSEUM OPENS IN DEIA
A museum celebrating the life and works of Robert Graves to open at the end of July.
This month the Ca N’Alluny Finca, which was built by the celebrated British poet Robert Graves in 1932, will open to the public as The Robert Graves Museum. The original house and garden, which is located alongside a 7,000sq metre olive grove, has been painstakingly renovated and even original furniture has been restored.
The Museum provides a general overview of the author’s life and works and will feature some of his most personal documents. On arrival, visitors are given a 15 minute video presentation and are able to see the original entrance to the house, lounge, dining room, kitchen and the famous writing room where Graves wrote I, Claudius, The Greek Myths and White Goddess.
The house also features the original printing press that Graves brought to the island at that time when he was living with the American poet Laura Riding. Together they founded the Seizin Press in 1930, which provided a vehicle for him to print his own works and that of his friends.
In the exhibition room inside the house a selection of Graves’ original manuscripts are on display together with personal belongings and books. Says the poet’s elder son, William Graves, who has been responsible for the project; “My father always wrote by hand with a quill and ink because he found the movement of the quill on the paper relaxing”.
The Robert Graves Museum is located in the village of Deia, approximately 40 minutes by car from Palma International Airport. It is open 6 days a week (closed Mondays). Open 10.00 am – 5.00 pm. Admission is timed by ticket and costs 5 euros per person. Further information, Tel: + 34 971 639047
