SPANISH ROYALS INAUGURATE WORKS OF BARCELO & CALATRAVA

The work of Miquel Barcelo and Santiago Calatrava are now on show in Palma's Cathedral and in the Es Baluard Contemporary Art Museum.

The King & Queen of Spain have officially launched the work of two great Spanish artists in Palma de Mallorca; the internationally renowned Mallorcan artist, Miquel Barcelo and one of Spain’s most famous contemporary architects, Santiago Calatrava.

Barcelo unveiled his spectacular mural, which covers 300 m2, in Saint Peter’s Chapel in Palma’s famous gothic cathedral, which this year is celebrating its 700th anniversary. The ceramic mural, which has taken seven years to complete, covers almost all the chapel and depicts the miracle of the loaves and fishes. Barcelo has also completed the chapel’s five stained glass windows, all of which are 12 metres high. For more information on his work: www.miquelbarcelo.org.

A few minutes walk away, contained within the city’s old renaissance walls, the Es Baluard Contemporary Art Museum has opened a new exhibition to celebrate its 3rd anniversary of sculptures, drawings and ceramics by Santiago Calatrava, one of Spain’s most famous architects. The highlight of the exhibition is a sculpture that has been especially created for the museum entitled “Bou”, which stands 15 metres tall on the museum’s outer terrace facing panoramic views across the Bay of Palma. SPECIAL PERFORMANCE OF BARCELO’S “PASO DOBLE”

In the heart of Palma’s old town in the historical La Lonja building, the work of Miquel Barcelo in partnership with the choreographer Josef Nadj, will be recreated in a performance entitled “Paso Doble”. This was first performed last year to at the Festival de Aviñon where it received critical acclaim. The “Paso Doble” creates the illusion of living in a Barcelo painting, which has been recreated as the set. Both artists created this living painting which at the end of the performance is destroyed by the artist. The “Paso Doble” will be performed from the 19th – 21st February. Entrance limited.
