NEW PEARL EXHIBITION OPENS ON MALLORCA

Mallorca's famous pearl industry celebrates its centenary this year.

The “Industry & Glamour” pearl exhibition forms part of the centenary promotions this year of Mallorca’s pearl industry. The exhibition has opened in Manacor, in the centre of the island, which is the home town of pearl making. It focuses on the development of the industry over the past 100 years, how the pearl is made and the influence that pearl jewellery has had on fashion in general over the years.

Apart from explaining how the pearl is made on the island, the exhibition features a wide range of jewellery, archive documentation, historic photographs, advertising campaigns, different design concepts and audiovisual material. In short, it tells the story of how Mallorcan pearls became known as the “Spanish Pearl” worldwide.

The exhibition is located in a medieval building called the "Torre dels Enagistes", which also houses a permanent exhibition on Manacor's history. Entrance to the exhibition is free and is open Monday to Saturday through until September 10th, 2007. Further information:
