THE RETURN OF “JOGGING ROUND MAJORCA”

For any visitor to Mallorca this delightful book is a must !

Back in 1994 writer and broadcaster, Leonard Pearcey, who also resides on the island for part of the year, discovered a long forgotten 1920’s travel book in a book shop in Oxford, called “Jogging round Majorca” written by Gordon West.

In the 1920’s, the author and his wife decided to visit somewhere unexplored and unspoiled, right off the beaten tourist route; they chose the then little-known island of Mallorca. Travelling via Paris and Barcelona, they boarded a small steamboat which took them to the Bay of Palma arriving alongside the ancient stone walls of the city. From there they began their adventure around the island, encountering hair-raising motor rides around steep cliffs and mule rides over mountains, lodging in simple hotels, a charcoal burner’s hut and a monastery.

Not only did Pearcey manage to convince publishers, Black Swan, to print the book but he also read the book on BBC Radio 4 and as a result, the book featured on the bestseller lists within a week and had to be reprinted three times.

Now, this delightful book is available in print once more from publishers Black Swan, Ref: ISBN 0-552-99601-7.
