MALLORCA’S AUTUMN 2007 MUSIC PROGRAMME
Each year Mallorca’s musical calendar becomes more impressive with a mix of classical to modern, jazz concerts to ballet featuring local, national and international artists.
Mallorca’s Music Festival: 13th October – November 4th
This festival opens with “Viva L’Opera – Bella Voce” (13th October) featuring international soloists, the Capella Mallorquina and the festival’s own orchestra, which will perform works by Bellini, Donizetti, Rossini, Verdi and Puccini in Palma’s historic and recently refurbished Municipal Theatre.
Palma’s Xesc Forteza Theatre: Tacea la Notte Placida (20th October). Also performances of works by Bizet, Sonizetti, Humperdinck, Lortzing, Rossini, Mozart, Schubert and Verdi. Singing master class will also take place in this theatre from October 26th-30th finishing in a gala performance by the graduates of the master class on October 31st .
Teatro Principal: November 3rd , Verdi’s Requiem.
Palma Cathedral: November 4th will host the closing concert of the Mallorca Music Festival with various versions of “Ave Maria”.
The Balearic Symphony Orchestra:October 4th, 2007 - May 15th, 2008.
This season, under the direction of Philippe Bender, the orchestra will offer an interesting mixture of classical and modern concerts. All the concerts various directors will be conducting throughout the season including Stewart Bedford and Matthias Barnert. A series of Christmas concerts are planned from December 20th. Puerto Soller’s Classical Music Festival:29th September – 21st October.
These concerts will take place in the Santa Catalina Oratorio where the Sea Museum is also located. The season starts with a piano recital by Alexander Malter performing works of Haydn, Mozart and Greig. A piano duet will be performed on October 13th by Alexander Malter and Ludmilla Kogan. On October 21st the soprano Evelina Dobreceva will give a recital of works by Mozart, Schumann and Greig. For more information: www.festivalportsoller.com.
Opera, Theatre and Ballet in Palma’s Auditorium
The Auditorium’s programme starts is ballet programme on September 29th with the Ballet of Brazil, on November 24th Ballet Victor Ullate will perform and on February 21st, 2008, The Dusseldorf Opera Ballet will perform with Carmina Burana. More information: www.temporadadeballet.es.
Opera Season: The Auditorium will present Verdi’s “ La Traviatta” on November 14th, Mozart’”don Giovanni”, November 15th, Puccini’s La Boheme, November 16th and Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” on November 17th. More information: www.auitoriumpalma.es.
Modern & Classical Ballet
The International Dansamaniga Dance Festival takes place at Cala Millor on the east coast of the island, in the San Maniga Auditorium and will feature a variety of dance from classical ballet to flamenco. The Festival starts on September 22nd with Mallorca’s own Youth Ballet through to December 8th. More information: www.dansamaniga.com.
Jazz
Over recent year Jazz concerts has played an increasingly important part in the social and cultural calendar of the island. Visit the Alcudia Jazz Festival in the town’s auditorium which will feature the Kitflus Quartett on September 22nd and Pedro Iturralke Quartet on September 29th. The Jazz Voyeur Festival will present international jazz legends, Chick Corea and Bela Fleck, in Palma’s Auditorium on November 11th. As to we enter the festive season, Marlena Smalls and The Hallelujah Gospel Christmas will perform on December 13th.
In addition, the successful Jazz Voyeur Club in the heart of Palma’s old town is open year round with a programme of jazz that changes each month. This month it is featuring a series of popular Argentinean jazz concerts with the Escalandrum Sextet (7-10th September). In October the composer and poet Miguel Cantilo will perform (11-13 October). In November, Lidia and Luis Borda (23 & 24th November). More information: www.jazzvoyeur.com.
Bunyola Music Festival: September 28th – December 1st.
This festival is now entering its 23rd year and starts on September 28th with the Balearic Symphony Orchestra in the town’s own historic church. On October 6th the Nova Lux choir will perform; Alla Spagonola October 13th; the flautist Pamela Thorby and the organist, Peter Seymour will perform on October 20th, October 27th Ars Musicae orchestra will perform baroque works.
On November 10th and 17th the pianists Ramón Coll and Miquel Farré will perform accordingly. The soprano, Maria José Perelló accompanied by pianist David Mohedano will perform on November 24th. The closing concert of the festival on December 1st will be a celebration of music by young people from the town. All the concerts, apart from the opening concert, start at 20.45 in the town’s own cultural centre.
