PALMA WELCOMES ITS MILLIONETH CRUISING PASSENGER & CELEBRATES RECORD YEAR
Palma has grown into one of the leading cruise ship destinations in the Med
The Port of Palma welcomed its millioneth cruise passenger in November representing a 13% increase over 2006. The local port authority announced record breaking figures which will total just under 500 cruise ship movements this year. Furthermore, according to their statistics, Palma now ranks third as a crusing destination in the Mediterranean behind Barcelona and Civitavecchia in Italy.
At the same time, a 23 million euro investment was announced this month to build a new jetty in Palma’s West Quay to enable two cruise ships of up to 380 metres long and 30 metres wide to dock at the same time on the same quay. This project will further encourage the “mega” cruise ships to visit Palma and is scheduled to begin operations in Spring 2009.
In addition to the transit cruise shipping, tour operators such as Tui Thomson use Palma as its base for their cruise ships the Island Escape and Island Star.
Commenting on the announcement, the Mallorca Tourist Board’s President, Alvaro Middelmann said;”Cruising has been one of Mallorca’s tourism success stories in recent years and not only serves to diversify our tourist product but also brings us high spending tourists”.
