BRITISH VISITORS TO MALLORCA UP IN 2007

Mallorca still attracts more British holidaymakers than any other Mediterranean island.

According to recent figures from Palma International Airport, Mallorca has managed to retain its market lead with the announcement that UK visitors to the island were up by 5% in 2007, totalling approximately 2.3 million UK passengers arriving into the airport throughout the year.

Apart from the first two months of 2007, each month reported a steady increase in passenger movement. For example, over 5% more UK passengers visited in December last year. This factor also demonstrates that Mallorca is seeing the fruits of its labours to promote it’s off season tourism outside of the main summer months, which has been a constant campaign for the past 15 years or so.

Furthermore, total passenger arrivals are up by approximately 3%, with just over 11 million passengers arriving into Palma airport during 2007.

Mallorca, is still regarded as one of the favourite British overseas holiday destinations and possibly one of the most established destinations in Europe with over a 100 years of experience in tourism. In 2005, the Mallorca Tourist Board celebrated its centenary.

Today, its main attractions are hundreds of daily direct flights from all the UK, a short flying time of only two hours, the wonderful Mediterranean climate, beautiful scenery of mountains and beaches, and one of the most sophisticated modern infrastructures in the Mediterranean.

In the past seven years the local Balearic Islands government has spent over €4.000.000 million euros on improvements to the island’s infrastructure including new roads, new rail links, new tunnels, etc… In addition, approximately €120 million euros is being invested in the construction of a new Congress Palace in Palma which is scheduled for completion in 2010.

In recent years the island has been steadily improving quality and developing the cultural and gastronomic side of its tourism industry. The success of developing Mallorca’s rural interior tourism has had many spin offs, which have revived interest in the island’s own culture and traditional “fiestas”, local produce including local wine and olive oil and local cuisine.
