MALLORCA’S HOTEL NEWS ROUND UP SPRING 2008

Foreign and local investment continues to come into Mallorca as leading international and Spanish hotel groups open new hotels on the island. By April of this year four brand new hotels will have opened plus redevelopment projects of exisiting hotels. In addition, plans have also been announced to open two further luxury hotels on the island converting Mallorca into a top international destination in the Mediterranean for the discerning traveller.

NEW HOTEL OPENINGS

Hilton Sa Torre Mallorca, Llucmajor.

The long awaited luxury five star Hilton hotel will open its doors at the end of April and will start taking reservations from June of this year. A total of €32 million (approximately ₤23.9 million) has been invested in the construction of this hotel, which is located in the area of Llucmajor (east of Palma) literally 10-15 minutes drive from the airport and 20 minutes drive from the centre of Palma.

The hotel features 90 rooms including 15 suites and is being presented as a business and leisure hotel with the Sa Torre Conference Centre featuring 10 separate meeting rooms, 2 conference rooms, 2 banqueting rooms and a 24 hour business centre. In addition, Wifi Internet is available throughout the hotel complemented by a library and various lounge areas.

The hotel spa includes 3 treatment rooms, sauna, hot/cold showers, Turkish bath, and ice bath, The Hilton Gymnasium and Fitness Centre, two outdoor swimming pools (one of which will be heated year round), 1 childrens’ pool, 2 tennis courts. The hotel also has two restaurants, 1 main bar and an outside snack bar beside the swimming pool .

Portofino – Urban Sea Hotel, Palma.

The new Portofino Urban Sea Hotel in Cuidad Jardin is located just minutes from Palma International Airport, two minutes walk away from the beach, and 10 minutes drive from central Palma. The hotel, which has recently opened featured 73 rooms, a restaurant, an outdoor swimming pool, a bar and terrace area, and a piano bar. Prices start from €77 for a double room, excluding breakfast and local tax.

Palacio Avenida Hotel – Palma

A new 70 room four star hotel is scheduled to open this autumn in the centre of Palma. Located at Plaza España in the centre of the city, the hotel is ideally located within walking distance of all shopping, restaurants and bars. The Palacio Avenida is owned by the Rustic Group who have invested just over ₤16 million (22 million €) into the development and it will the Group’s fourth hotel to open in Palma. Es Ratxo Hotel & Spa, Puigpunyent.

Recently opened rural hotel, Es Ratxo, is located in at the foot of the Puig de Galatzó mountain near the village of Puigpunyent. The Hotel Es Ratxo and country estate dates back to the 17th century when it was owned by Comte Mal.

The building has been completely restored to provide the very latest in luxury accommodation and facilities with its own spa. The hotel's restaurant offers gourmet cuisine in an authentic setting of the estate's own 16th century "Tafona" (traditional olive press).

Redevelopment of Existing Hotels.

Maritim Hotel Galatzó, Peguera.

This existing hotel is located on the Costa de la Calma near the popular sea side resort of Peguera south west of Mallorca and within 25 minutes drive of Palma. It has re opened under Maritim Hotels. The new management intends to return to the hotel’s old tradition of offering an extensive sports programme with its own tennis school “ever-court” with five tennis courts (hard surface), two covered courts.

This year, the ex Wimbledon Champion, Australian, Peter McNamara, will be available for personal tennis coaching from 8th -10th November. Reservations can be made in the hotel.

The hotel also has its own golf school “Delfigolf” which books tee off times in nearby golf courses, offers golf training with weekly tournaments and a variety of golf events.

In spring of this year, the hotel will open its own health and fitness centre, which will be distributed over three floors with an indoor swimming pool, saunas, Jacuzzi, fitness room, six treatment rooms offering massages and all the traditional beauty treatments plus physiotheraphy.

The hotel features 169 rooms and suites, two restaurants, three bars, two exterior swimming pools and its own conference facilities with 8 conference rooms, the largest providing capacity for up to 390 people. Each conference room has large floor to ceiling glass windows providing views across the Sierra de Tramuntana and the capability to drive cars into the room for launches etc…

Cap Vermell Beach Hotel, Club & Restaurant, Canyamel.

This 12 room hotel was originally opened in 1934 as the Hostal Cuevas on the sea front at Canyamel on the north east of the island. It has recently been redevleoped and reopened to the public and features a seaside restaurant, chill out lounge and beach club.

Each of the bedrooms are furnished in Mallorcan style with terraces and six have sea views. Prices start at €110 per night in a double room to include breakfast (excluding local tax). Information & reservations:

Jumeirah Plans First European Spa Resort in Puerto Soller in 2010

The prestigious Jumeirah Hotel Group has announced plans for its first European Spa Resort in Port Soller, Mallorca, scheduled to open in early 2010. The 120 room resort will feature extensive conference and banqueting facilities, two swimming pools, a spa and health & fitness centre.

The location of the hotel will be above the Port on a hilltop overlooking the Bay of Soller and the Mediterranean beyond with wonderful views.

First St. Regis Resort in Europe opens in Puerto Portals

The existing Mardavall Hotel & Spa has become the first St Regis Resort in Europe and is now known as the St. Regis Mardavall Mallorca. The hotel, which was originally opened in 2002, underwent a refurbishment programme at the end of last year, and has now re-opened as one of 14 St Regis resorts worldwide.
