BOOM IN CYCLING HOLIDAYS ON MALLORCA

Last year the island attracted a record number of cyclists making Mallorca one of the top cycling tourist destinations in Europe.

As part of Mallorca’s ongoing campaign to promote activity holidays, local tourism authorities have worked on new initiatives over the past 10 years to provide top facilities and 260 kms of special cycling routes around the island. The success of these initiatives are now evident in recent figures showing that Mallorca attracted over 87,000 cyclists in 2007 with predications of a further 10% increase over the next couple of years making the island one of the top cycling tourist destinations in Europe.

New Cycle Routes

A new map is now available featuring 10 different cycle routes throughout the island providing detailed information on each route together with suggestions of hotels on each route with cyclists’ facilities. Further information: www.illesbalears.es or www.inestur.es.

Llucmayor – Mallorca’s Cycling Capital

Located along the south east coast, Llucmayor is widely regarded as the cycling “capital” of the Mediterranean. The region features almost 200 kms of special signposted cycling routes comprising six designated cycle tourism routes and two routes on non asphalt lanes specifically aimed at mountain bike enthusiasts. All the routes are clearly signposted and marked out on a special map available for cycling visitors with details of what they will find on the route and other useful information.

A variety of hotels are featured throughout the region, which are specifically geared up to cyclists’ requirements with special workshop rooms on site and menus offering special diets. For more information: www.llucmajor.org.

Hotels Offering Special Cycling Packages

There are many hotels on the island offering special cycling facilities and here are a couple of examples:

Delta Hotel, Llucmayor

In conjunction with the Swiss company, Max Hürzeler, the hotel organises cycling excursions throughout Mallorca and supplies full facilities for cyclists to rent or maintain and repair their own bikes throughout their stay. www.hoteleraalfa.com or www.huerzeler.com.

Barcelo Pueblo Park, Playa de Palma

This hotel also works with Max Hürzeler and features its own professional cycling centre with all facilities. The hotel also has its own fitness studio, three swimming pools, sauna, Turkish Bath and massage/beauty treatment rooms. In addition it offers special menus for cyclists. Read’s Hotel, Santa Maria

For a more “upmarket” cycling holiday, Relais Chateaux rated Read’s Hotel is now offering special cycling facilities to its guests and provides complimentary trekking and mountain bikes. Carbon road bikes are available to rent at a cost of €30 per day.

The hotel’s proximity to the island’s famous Tramuntana mountain range makes is a good base for the keen cyclist. In addition, the hotel’s recently opened Vespasian Spa provides cyclists with a top facility for post training recovery and relaxation and it has been selected by various top international cycling teams for winter/spring pre-season training.

The hotel’s cycling package includes four nights accommodation, breakfast, limousine transfer to and from the airport, cycle hire, one six course dinner in the hotel’s Michelin starred restaurant Bacchus, a three course lunch or dinner in the hotel’s Bistro 33, three ESPA fitness massages, energy drinks and bars, use of the Vespasian Spa. Mallorca’s Velodrome

The velodrome, which was completed at the end of 2006, is located in San Ferran on the outskirts of Palma. It is a covered facility featuring with 250 metres of track and has a capacity for just over 5,000 spectators. In 2007 the track was used to host the UCI Senior Track Cycling World Championships when the British team won seven world titles.
