UK VISITOR FIGURES UP

MALLORCA REPORTS 3.7% INCREASE IN BRITISH VISITOR FIGURES
FIRST QUARTER 2003

Inspite of the general gloom around the travel industry at the beginning of the year, combined with the war in Irak and a late Easter. Mallorca, one of the Brit’s most enduring holiday destinations, has reported a 3.7% increase in visitor figures from the UK for the months of January, February and March, representing just over 5,000 more visitors.

The statistics, which are released by Palma de Mallorca Airport (AENA), are based on passenger movements in and out of the airport. These figures are expected to increase dramatically in the next quarter with the introduction of no less than seven “no frills – low cost” airlines featuring Palma from April/May. They include: Jet 2, Planet Air, MyTravelLite, excelairways, Air Scotland, Flyglobespan and bmi baby.

Tomeu Deya, Manager of the Mallorca Tourist Board, says; “Inspite of everything that has been happening in the world UK travellers still want to escape. People feel safe here, and with a flying time of just under two hours from the UK, the island is easily accessible.

In addition, our efforts to promote Mallorca as an all year round destination are starting to pay off, and more UK visitors are coming here for walking, cycling or golfing holidays in the winter months”.
