INTERNATIONAL DESIGNER WEAR & LOCAL ARTISAN GOODS MAKE MALLORCA IDEAL FOR SHOPPING

The concentration of top international designer names and stores in Mallorca's capital of Palma combined with quality artisan hand made goods and products has made Mallorca an ideal location for shopping breaks.

Prada, Loewe, Burberry, Ralph Lauren, Versace, Cartier, Mont Blanc, Mandarin Duck, Farrutx, Lacoste and Camper and many more are just a few of the names you will find in the excellent range of small boutiques in Palma. The concentration of quality shoe shops would even prove a challenge for Imelda Marcos.

In addition, Spain's successful high volumne fashion shops including Zara and Mango are strongly featured in Palma.

This year a new centre of quality artisan goods has opened in Palma's old town. This initiative is backed by the local government to assist small businesses practising the ancient traditions of local handmade crafts and goods. These include glass wear of exquisite detail and colour, a wide range of ceramics and pottery, pearls, leather goods, embroidery, fabrics, jewellery and a whole range of gastronomic products and wines typical of the Balearic Islands.

Tomeu Deyŕ, Director of the Mallorcan Tourist Board, says; "The strength of sterling makes Mallorca particularly good value for the UK shopper. Savings of up to 50% can be found on a wide selection of goods over prices in the UK".

When the visitor is tired of shopping, there are plenty of alternative activities: Architectural and historical walks around the old town (free brochure and maps available from the tourist office), exhibitions - 28 different art exhibitions are being featured in and around Palma throughout October and November, eating - anything from coffee and ensaimadas (local sweet pastry) to tapas bars, a wide range of quality restaurants providing menus of every type of cuisine featuring local fresh produce wherever possible.

A selection of UK tour operators feature short breaks these include: Alternative Mallorca, Bonaventure Holidays, Breakaway, Bridge Travel, British Airways Holidays, Cadogan Holidays, Classic Collection, Cresta Holidays, Crystal Holidays, CV Travel, Eurobreak, Freelance Holidays, Lotus Supertravel, Magic of Spain, Mundi Color, Portland Direct, Premier Cities, The Real Spain, Seasons in Style, Simply Spain, Sovereign, Thomson, Time Off and Travelscene and Weekenders.

The Mallorca Tourist Board is a private, independent entity which was founded in 1905. It is therefore considered to be the first ever tourist board in Europe. The objective then was to create awareness of Mallorca as a destination. Now, almost a 100 years later, it ranks as one of the favourite holiday destinations of the British.
