WHAT'S NEW ON MALLORCA?RESTAURANT, HOTEL FOOD & WINE NEWS

This spring and summer visitors to Britain’s favourite overseas destination will be able to sample new hotels, restaurants, beach clubs and some exciting food and local wine:

NEW OPENINGS

New Restaurant for British Chef, Marc Fosh.

Marc Fosh, who won a Michelin star for the Bacchus Restaurant in Read’s Hotel, Santa Maria, how now decided to try something different and will open his new restaurant; “Simply Fosh” in the Hotel Convent de la Missió in Palma. The restaurant follows on from Marc’s success with his own food boutique/cookery school, which he opened three years ago in Palma (www.foshfood.com). The concept behind the new restaurant is to feature a simple menu using the freshest ingredients from Palma’s local markets, offering high quality at reasonable prices. “Simply Fosh” is scheduled to open on April 1st. Riskal Entertainment Complex
The brand new Riskal Entertainment Complex has just opened 10 minutes from Palma’s city centre and features an art gallery, auction rooms, an artisan gift shop, five restaurants; The Titanic, the Rei en Jaume (featuring Mallorcan gastronomy), the Sa Pergola family restaurant and the Café Son Serra Parera. Riskal also features the Jartan’s nightclub and the Miami Jazz Café. In the near future a shop selling local produce and a cooking school are planned. Information: www.riskal.es.

Nassau Beach Club

In the fashionable port area of Portixol just minutes away from Palma’s historic centre, the island’s latest beach club has opened offering guests a great location to chill out and enjoy views of the sea and Palma’s impressive cathedral. The Nassau Beach Club restaurant offers a selection of Mediterranean and Asian cuisine with specialty fresh sea food dishes. An exotic list of cocktails is available to be enjoyed with the club’s own music mixed by Anima. The club is open from 09.00 through to 23.00 and also features its’ own art gallery. www.nassaubeachclub.com

Mostra Cuina– a chance to sample Mallorcan food at its best – from April 15th – May 3rd.

A total of 60 restaurants throughout the island will participate in this celebration of Mallorca’s gastronomic culture using preparing their signature dishes from Wednesdays through to Sundays over the three weeks. Information: www.mostradecuinamallorquina.com

Fira de Vi – Pollensa – 25 – 26th April.

The historic Santo Domingo convent in Pollensa will provide an impressive backdrop for the sixth local wine fair presenting the majority of the island’s local bodegas and their best wines. Information: www.viprimitiu.org.

HOTEL OPENINGS

NEW FASHION HOTEL- Hotel Zhero – Cas Catala, Illetes (opposite the Hotel Maricel)

Hotel Zhero opens this month and is ideally located literally 10 minutes from Palma’s city centre beside the sea at Cas Catala. Cool, modern design and décor gives the hotel a good contemporary feel with comfort. It features 39 rooms, a poolside grill restaurant, the Zhero Hour bar and a large swimming pool where guests can enjoy the sunshine and listen to great chill out music. A double room starts at €61 per person, per night, to include breakfast but excluding local tax. A pool suite room starts at €106 per person, per night. Information: www.hotel-zhero.com

NEW RURAL HOTEL – Hotel Ca’n Bonico, Ses Salines (south east)

A former 13th century manor house provides the stunning setting for this new luxury rural hotel in Ses Salines just minutes drive away from some of Mallorca’s most famous beaches including Es Trenc. The building has been totally refurbished maintaining many of its original features and architecture with stylish contemporary décor providing a completely updated modern look. It features 28 rooms, a restaurant and bar service, a large swimming pool and sunbathing area with panoramic views across fields of almond trees. NEW AGROTURISMO – Son Roig, Porreres (central island)

This historic farm estate has been completely refurbished since 2005 to offer all the comforts of modern day living whilst retaining many original features of the buildings. Son Roig offers 12 rooms (7 with terraces) and all with views overlooking the surrounding countryside, a restaurant serving typical Mallorcan cuisine using local home grown ingredients, a large swimming pool with sunbathing terrace and for winter visitors a library with open fire. NEW VILLAGE TOWNHOUSE HOTEL - Tofollubi, Llubi (close to Inca)

Opened this month in the village of Llubi is a new small townhouse hotel on the former site of one of the first distilleries on the island dating back to 1914. It has been totally refurbished to offer two large apartments split into 8 double rooms which are ideal for up to three families or small groups. Tofollubi also features a large garden with swimming pool, terrace and barbecue area and a meetings/banqueting room. RECENTLY OPENED CITY HOTEL - El Palacio Avenida, Palma
Located right in the centre of the city on Plaza España, the recently opened Palacio Avenida hotel has opened on the site of a former cinema. The hotel is owned by the Urban Rustic Hotel Group which has invested almost €20 million (approximately £18.45 million) in the refurbishment providing a four star hotel which will be aimed at business travellers and tourist visitors, particularly at weekends.

It features 68 rooms with a grand suite on the ninth floor over 200m2 with a private terrace of 60m2 overlooking the whole of Palma. Other facilities include a café, a restaurant serving quality cuisine and a convention and meetings room. The hotel’s decor has been created by Bruno Borrione, part of the Phillipe Starck team, who has maintained the cinema theme integrating the promotional campaigns of famous films in the décor. This five star hotel located close to Illetes, approximately 10 minutes from Palma, has recently opened new suites from which guests have direct access to the sea plus their own terrace and private swimming pool. The “Wallpaper” award was given for the combination of elegant contemporary design using local stone and wood and maximizing the hotel’s great sea front location.
