MALLORCA HITS THE RIGHT NOTE WITH NEW PROGRAMME OF CONCERTS

This year, Mallorca offers visitors a wide range of music concerts around the island:

Concerts at La Residencia Hotel

La Residencia Hotel celebrates the centenary of the composer Issac Albéniz featuring the same Steinway piano that Albéniz used. Forthcoming concerts include: Marta Ambrós (piano), Alfredo Ardanaz (violin) and Guillermo Femenías (guitar) August 7th; Juan Muñoz (piano) on October 2nd and Andreu Riera (piano) and Abigail Sardón (soprano) on December 4th. Chopin Festival - Valldemossa

Concerts are held every Sunday throughout August in Valldemossa’s famous monastery where Chopin stayed during the winter of 1838. This year they feature Marta Zableta on the 9th, Nelson Goerner on the 16th, Matthias Kirchnereit on the 23rd and Slvia Márquez on the 30th. All concerts start at 10 pm. Summer Concerts at the Palau March – Palma

The Bartomeu March Foundation is presenting a series of concerts featuring an interesting mix starting with music from the Andes and Latin America on June 26th. On July 3rd the concert will feature works by Haydn, Cavestany and Bruch. On August 14th it will focus on the traditional sounds of Indian music and on September 18th the concert will feature works of Schumann and Mendelssohn. World Music in Palma

The Caxia Foundation within the former Grand Hotel building (Plaza Weyler) will offer a series of concerts ; sefardita songs (July 9th); tango (July 23rd); music of Argel (August 6th), samba, bossa nova and flamenco on August 20th and music from Brazil (September 17th). Classical to Jazz at the Cultural Centre in Andratx

From July 11th a series of recitals are planned featuring the works of Mozart, Beethoven, Saraste, Kreisler and Stojanovic on July 18th. On July 25th the mood changes to the blues music with the Big Yuyo Band and on August 1st, the Sheela’s Jazz Soul Quartet will play. All concerts start at 21.00. Information: www.ccandratx.com

Leading Austrian Opera Stars Perform on Mallorca

For the night of August 2nd, the Austrian Friends of Mallorca Association in conjunction with the Balearic Symphony Orchestra will present a performance featuring Kisten Blanck, Johan Botha, Bernd Weikl and Karl Rydl at Bellver Castle with arias and duets from Wagner, Verdi, Puccini, Rossini and Giordano.

Leonard Cohen

On August 11th, the Canadian performer, Leonard Cohen visits the island for the first time at the Palma Arena. Information: www.worldticketshop.es.

The Pollensa Festival, July – August.

The setting for this popular festival is in the historic cloisters of the Santo Domingo Convent in the centre of Pollensa. Some of the highlights include singer Joan Manuel Serrat, the Barcelona Jazz Orchestra and Tony Hadley formerly of Spandau Ballet. More information: www.festivalpollenca.org.

Deia’s International Classic Music Festival, May - September.

Takes place at Son Maroig, which was the summer residence of the Austrian Archduke Luis Salvdor, and provides an idyllic setting for this festival which runs up until September. Information: www.dimf.com.

The Bellver Festival, July – August.

The castle provides a dramatic setting overlooking the Bay of Palma with concerts: scheduled every Thursday throughout the month of July. Information: www.simfonicadebalears.com

Music lovers will be able to hear young performers in the Summer Serenades Festival with performances of classical music every Tuesday throughout August.

Music Mallorca

Announces its programme between October 10th and November 8th featuring Mozart to a night of Music of all Nations featuring five musicians and 100 instruments. Information: www.musicmallorca.com

Jazz Voyeur Festival, through to December.

This festival is now in its sixt year and continues to feature a wide range of top international stars. Information: www.jazzvoyeur.com.

Sa Pobla International Jazz Festival, August.

Entrance to all the concerts are free and each concert starts at 22.30 in the centre of the town. Information: www.ajsapobla.net/jazz.

Alcudia International Jazz Festival, end of August - September.

Port of Soller’s Classic Music Festival, September-October.

Concerts featuring music for paino, violin and clarinet will take place every Saturday from September 26th through to October 17th. in the “Museu del Mar”. Information: www.festivalportdesoller.com.
