MALLORCA SHORTLISTED TO HOST AMERICA'S CUP
The Swiss champions of "Alinghi" must now make a selection for the 32nd America's Cup.
The organising committee for the next America’s Cup have announced that Mallorca has been shortlisted with four other cities: Valencia, Naples, Marseille and Lisbon, to host the event in 2007.
Competition is fierce to host this event as experts estimate it will bring in approximately 1.200 million euros into the island. Mallorca is confident it has a good chance of winning the bid, according to Palma’s organisers, the Real Club Nautico. They have been collaborating with the America’s Cup Management team working on behalf of the Swiss Nautical Society, who are making making the selections.
The Committee were particularly impressed, not only with the meterological conditions within the Bay of Palma, but also with the general infrastructure of Palma and its close access to what would be the America’s Cup headquarters and village.
Mallorca has steadily built up an enviable reputation in the Mediterranean as being a centre for yachting, and particularly for superyachts. Many key regattas are held in the Bay of Palma annually including the King of Spain’s own “Copa del Rey”, the Queen of Spain’s “Regatta Princesa Sofia”, and the classic “Trofeo Conde de Barcelona”.
The final selection will be announced on December 15th.
