MORE RURAL FINCA HOTELS OPEN ON MALLORCA

Over the past decade Mallorca, one of Britain’s favourite holiday destinations, has been developing its rural tourism know as “agro turismo”. This summer three new rural hotels have opened: Son Brull, Pollenca; Llenaire, Port of Pollenca and Finca Rural Valldemossa, Valldemossa.

Son Brull was orignally an 18th century convent and has been restored as a luxury rural hotel by the Suau Family, who also operate the five star Relais Chateau, Cala San Vicente Hotel. Son Brull, which is located just outside the town of Pollenca, features 23 rooms and all the facilities of a five star hotel including a Health Spa with Turkish Bath, sauna, jacuzzi and treatment rooms. Landscaped gardens surround the property including the hotel’s own market garden to supply the hotel’s guests. www.sonbrull.com

Llenaire this stunning finca estate overlooks the Bay of Pollensa on one side and the mountains on the other, and is surrounded by countryside where over 300 sheep graze. The family, which owns the property, actually acquired it just over 100 years ago and have retained many of the original features. Llenaire features 11 rooms, and all the facilities of a luxury stately home. The finca has its own market garden producing all the vegetables and fruit for guests. www.hotelllenaire.com

Finca Rural Valldemossa is an original Mallorcan stone house, which was part of the Cartuja of Valldemossa and is over 100 years old. It stands on a plot of 65,000 metres with views across mountains and the town. It has 12 luxury rooms, all of which are completely different and have been named after different personalities connected to Valldemossa including Luis Salvador, Chopin and George Sand. www.valldemossahotel.com

Says Tomeu Deya: “Many of these buildings have been owned by Mallorcan families for centuries and by opening them as hotels, or rural fincas, they have been able to maintain the estates and retain a part of our cultural past”.

The development of rural tourism on Mallorca has been extremely successful over the past decade and now over 100 rural tourism properties are operating on the island. The majority can be found on www.agroturismo-balear.com and www.fincaturismo.com. In addition, Reis de Mallorca, which is an association of 30 quality character hotels, which are generally located in areas away from the mainstream tourist resorts. The Mallorca Tourist Board is a private, independent entity which was founded in 1905. It is therefore considered to be the first ever tourist board in Europe. The objective then was to create awareness of Mallorca as a destination. Now, almost a 100 years later, it ranks as one of the favourite British holiday destinations.
