MALLORCA'S BEACHES AWARDED RECORD NUMBER OF BLUE FLAGS IN 2010

This year Mallorca has won a total of 64 Blue Flag awards for its beaches and marinas.

From a total of 72 of the island’s official beaches, 46 have attained Blue Flags representing an increase of five more beaches over last year and 18 marinas – one more than last year.

New awards go to Playa de Muro in the north, Es Carregador in the north east and Cala SaNau, on the east coast which has the largest number of Blue Flag beaches. Along the south west coast new Blue Flags have been awarded to Can Pere Antoni, Sana Ponsa and Camp de Mar.

Mallorca has 554 kms of coastline with a total of 208 beaches, the majority of which are sandy. Over 60 beaches have access for the disabled and one (Playa del Mago near Portals) is officially nudist. The Blue Flag award is given to beaches that demonstrate the highest standards of health, safety and hygiene, accessibility, information, facilities for the disabled, rescue and lifeguard services. Internationally, 3,511 Blue Flags have been awarded in 33 countries in Europe, Canada and Morocco. Spain has picked up more awards than any other nation with a total of 605 and according to the Association for Environmental Education; the Balearic Islands have secured the largest increase this year in Spain.
