PALMA DE MALLORCA PORT BREAKS ALL PREVIOUS CRUISING RECORDS IN 2010

Palma Port Authority announces another record breaking year...

In the first nine months of 2010 Palma Port Authority announced that it has already beaten its 2009 record receiving (up until September of this year) 1.072 million passengers as opposed to 1.056 million in 2009 and 533 cruise ship movements well over the record 470 achieved in the previous year. Palma Port Authorities anticipate a total increase of approximately 30% in cruise passengers by the end of this year.

This is the first time that Palma has passed the 500 mark for cruise ship movements demonstrating Palma’s appeal to the international cruising market coupled with the fact that The Port’s recent 23 million euro investment in building a new commercial quay to accept more “mega” cruisers has started to pay off.

Comments, Pedro Iriondo, President of the Fomento del Turismo de Mallorca and the island’s representative for AIDA Cruises; “Palma Port Authority has invested heavily in providing an improved infrastructure and modern facilities for a market which has grown dramatically in the past five years.

According to latest ABTA figures on cruising, the British fly cruise market is set to increase in 2011 and this could be very important for Mallorca”.

Palma is now the third most popular cruising destination in the Mediterranean behind Barcelona and Civitavecchia in Italy. In addition to the transit cruise shipping, tour operators such as Tui Thomson use Palma as its base for some of their cruise ships and Royal Caribbean International for the first time will be using Palma as a base its cruise ship, “Grandeur of the Seas” in 2011.
