Summer Sailing Scene on Mallorca
Mallorca is widely known as a focal point for sailing in the Mediterranean and is a favourite training location for Ben Ainslie and his British Olympic Sailing Team who have been perfecting their skills in the Bay of Palma for the 2012 Olympics. Here with a round – up of important international regattas and events which will take place this summer
Global Ocean Race – Race Start - September 25th
For the first time ever, Palma will host the starting point for the famous Global Ocean Race on September 25th. This race attracts competitors from all over the world and represents one of the great adventures of our time when a crew of just two people have to sail their vessel some 30,000 nautical miles in five stages.
The race will take nine months to complete the crossing of three oceans and four continents before crossing the finishing line in Palma in June 2012. Further information: www.globaloceanrace.com
Superyacht Cup - 22 – 25th June
Some 20 superyachts will participate for this year’s Superyacht Cup in Palma Bay. Although this is a private event, the public can view the yachts on Saturday, June 25th from 09.00 to 13.00. Information: http://thesuperyachtcup.com/
The Copa del Rey Celebrates its 30th Anniversary
One of the best known sailing events in the annual calendar is the King’s Cup which this year celebrates its 30th anniversary. The regatta takes place from July 30th through to August 6th when literally hundreds of yachts will set sail in Palma Bay to either participate or spectate. The King’s Cup always attracts many celebrities and members of the Spanish Royal Family always participate and follow the race closely from the royal yacht, “Fortuna”. The Count of Barcelona Trophy – 15-21st August
The classic regatta “Conde de Barcelona” always follows the Copa del Rey and is organised by the Hispania Foundation to bring classic yachts to the island in a magnificent display of an era gone by. Information: www.fundacionhispania.org
The Oyster Annual Regatta – 27th September – October 1st
Oyster Marine Yachts return to Mallorca for their 27th annual regatta which will be hosted by the Real Club Nautico in Palma. This will be the seventh time that Oyster has organised its annual regatta on the island which has become a favourite destination for these sailing yachts. The regatta takes place over five days when a fleet of 25 Oyster yachts will participate in races around the Bay of Palma and down to Andratx. Further information: www.oystermarine.com/events

Puerto Portals Celebrates 25th Anniversary
This year one of the island’s most elegant and luxurious ports celebrates its 25th anniversary rolling out a full programme of activities and entertainment throughout the year. Puerto Portals has become a magnet for the rich and famous and remains a great place to “people watch” from any one of terraces in the restaurants or bars along the front overlooking the yachts. Port Adriano to Inaugurate New Facilities later this year
Over the past three years a major investment has been made in this Port which was first opened in 1992, to expand its capacity and create 82 moorings for super yachts up to 60 metres. Furthermore, the entire port is being given a new contemporary facelift at the hand of international designer, Philippe Starck, who has designed all the commercial/leisure areas of the port.
