FESTIVE SWEETS CAN BE HEAVENLY

The Mallorcans are no different from anyone else at Christmas for sheer indulgence when it comes to a sweet tooth and this is the time to seek out some of the best outlets for traditional festive sweets and pastries. Turrón is traditionally eaten at Christmas in Spain and traditionally is is made from almonds and honey. Nowadays, there is an enormous variety of turrón both soft and hard.

In Palma’s old town there’s a wonderful selection at some of the oldest “bombonerías” on the island such as “Forn Fondo”on Calle Union 15 with its wonderful façade dating back to the “Belle Epoque” era of the early 1900’s. This family run business celebrates its centenary this year and their tempting range of turrón and chocolates and fresh desserts are all hand made on the premises and are simply superior to anything you can buy in a supermarket; 100% natural, quality ingredients with not a preservative in sight.

Closeby in Calle Orfila is “Frasquet” which is one of the most beautiful shops in Palma featuring a wonderful window display which is an absolute feast for the eyes with traditional sugared fruits of every variety and colour, chocolates and “turróns” galore. The intense, rich smell of chocolate hits you when you walk through the door. Also worthy of a mention is the “Fornet de la Soca in Calle Santa Jaume. This traditional artisan “bonboneria/panaderia” is featuring its own range of cocas, turrón, cakes and pastries.

Apart from the commercial outlets, the visitor can also pick up some of the best “turróns”, biscuits and cakes home-made by the nuns themselves at two of Palma’s oldest convents. The Santa Magdalena and Caputxines Convents are located just off the Ramblas (one of Palma’s main streets) and they are open, morning and afternoon, throughout the week during the festive period selling a delicious range of coconut, lemon and banana cakes to traditional round turrón and truffles.
