MALLORCA RECORDS SUMMER INCREASE IN UK VISITORS

Summer visitor figures from the UK to Mallorca show an increase of 1.29% in August 2002 over the same period in 2001, which means that over 58,000 more Brits visited the island in August this year. A total number of 1,621.562 British visitors have been recorded from January 2002 to August 30. The British market has remained strong this year inspite of fears that outside events would affect overall figures.

Palma Airport, which ranks within the top 10 airports in Europe in the summer months, has reported 6,316.956 total passenger movements up until the end of August 2002. However, independent traveller figures from the UK are anticipated to increase out of high season with the increase in daily scheduled flights from the UK - Easyjet (Gatwick, Luton & Liverpool), Go (Bristol, Stansted), British Airways (Gatwick), bmi british midland (Heathrow & East Midlands) , Air Europa (Gatwick).

The Mallorca Tourist Board is a private, independent entity which was founded in 1905. It is therefore considered to be the first ever tourist board in Europe. The objective then was to create awareness of Mallorca as a destination. Now, almost a 100 years later, it ranks as one of the favourite holiday destinations of the British.
