SOLLER TRAM CELEBRATES 90 YEARS OF SERVICE
One Mallorca's favourite tourist attractions still going strong...
This week, the oldest and the last remaining working tram in service in Spain, the Soller Tram, celebrates its 90th birthday. The electric tram operates between the town centre of Soller and the Port of Soller on the south west coast of Mallorca, and remains one of the much-loved sights for tourist and residents alike.
Much of the original tram still remains, as the operators have preferred to restore and maintain what they have to preserve the authenticity of this rather special mode of transport.
The short journey, over three kilometres, takes the passenger through gardens and orange groves and is possibly one of the most environmentally friendly methods of transport on the island.
Last year almost 850,000 passengers travelled on the tram, this figure represented an 11% increase on 2001, which only serves to further demonstrate the enduring appeal of taking a tram ride.
